Reading is something that many of us love from an early age, In fact, it’s a love that we carry with us through most of our lives once we get the bug for it. Although, nowadays you might be more smitten with the warm glow of an e-reader than the smell of a second-hand book. Creating the perfect space for you, and your family to read in isn’t as hard as you might think. In fact, you could use the space for anything that needs a little bit more quiet contemplation and less noise and electronics.
Pick the Space
First things first. Have a look around the house and check the spaces that you have available to create that little reading nook. You might already have a favorite area in which you read, many people do - making that the most obvious choice. Perhaps your kids like to read somewhere particular? Whatever you do, make a list of the things you’re going to want in the room. Coffee tables? Custom made upholstery chairs? How many bookshelves? A lot of those questions will have an impact too. Would you like to have music playing in that space? While it will be the ideal reading space, you perhaps would want to work on your other hobbies.
Light Show
Something that is going to be vital is learning to work with the light that the space gets. Have some fun playing with the layout, ideally wherever the seating will be should be the place that gets the most natural light. You can use mirrors and white paint to bounce the light around the space a little. A mixture of floor lamps and uplighting will stop you getting eye strain if you enjoy reading at night, warmer toned bulbs are a better choice here too. If you like to have something a little bit more unusual, or ‘showy,’ then get some LED pad lights (they usually run on batteries), and place them around your books shelves. Making the books the star of the show.
Pad it out
Something utterly essential in any reading nook or room is a lot of comfortable space. Once you start turning the pages on a new book, or something you’ve wanted to read for a while it is easy to get lost in the words. Readers who get absorbed quickly into the book will often report of getting cramp or parts of them going numb because of the positions they find themselves in for hours. So, to avoid all of that, pay particular attention to cushions, pillows, and throws. You might even like to have a few beanbags on the floor for when more than one of you are using the space.
Reading is one of the very best hobbies that families can do together, and what is better than having a space that can accommodate a whole family? Not much! Picture yourselves strewn around the area enjoying your favorite books together. Bliss.
