So it's officially summer vacation. Step-daughter got out of school yesterday and I have two whole months to try and figure out how to entertain her.
You see, I am NOT a creative person. Honestly, I don't even like doing crafts with the kids. Paint and glue and messes that I have to clean up? It sounds like too much work and the 6-year-old will just complain the whole time, making it not even worth the effort. Her idea of fun? Sitting in front of the TV all day.
That is so not happening this summer. While it's easier to just turn on the idiot box and let her sit in front of it all day, that means the 2-year-old will be sitting right there with her. What ever happened to kids wanting to go outside and play and enjoy the sunshine??
We live a short walk from a park/playground and I am going to try my hardest to keep them outside as much as possible this summer. So of course, with a toddler, a newborn and with a six year old, there are a few things to remember for summer safety:
1. Stay hydrated!
This is a big one, as little people are always running around and sweating - losing precious water and running the risk of dehydration. Make sure you pack plenty of water for an outdoor outing, and keep reminding the little ones to drink. Remember: you don't feel thirsty until you have already lost too much water.
2. Sunscreen!
Little kids are more susceptible to sunburns, so make sure to lather them up really good with sunscreen with at least an SPF 50, reapplying as often as necessary. This will prevent painful sunburns and reduce the risk of skin cancer.
