In this day in age, Mum’s have a lot to juggle – so it’s good to make your life as easy as possible and make sure you have all of the essentials you need for you and your child on hand should any accidents or incidents occur when you are out and about. Sometimes taking a baby or toddler out can feel like a moving day in itself. There are lots to think about, so we put together a list of first aid necessities, so you can create your own checklist.
Dressings
Dressings are essential for a first aid kit. If your child gets a cut – you need to make sure that the affected area is dry and clean. In order for you to do this, you need plasters or bandages. It could be that you need to bind a sprain, so you should always have some cotton bandages handy too. If you need to create a makeshift sling, then triangular bandages are the ones you would need. Gauze, sterile dressings and tape should also be handy. Safety pins and surgical tape can be good to make sure any dressings are supplied securely.
Scissors
There’s no point in having all of those dressings on hand if you have nothing to cut them up with. The last thing you want to be doing if you have a distressed child is fumble about for something to cut up bandages. That’s why you should always make sure you have scissors in your first aid kit. It’s something that many people forget.
Syringes
When you are giving medicine to a baby, teaspoons don’t do the trick as well as plastic syringes, and they tend to not be included in standard first aid kit packs. By having plastic syringes handy it will allow you to administer whatever medicine you need to quickly and effectively. It also tends to be much less messy.
An Antiseptic Cream or Spray
As mentioned, if your child has a cut or graze it’s essential that you make sure that the area is clean. This is where antiseptic cream or spray comes in handy. Sprays are usually very popular as it causes less fuss for the child. Make sure you have one of these in your first aid kit and put it on the affected area before dressing it. Baby cleansing wipes are also a good idea to clean cuts and grazes quickly.
First Aid Manual
Although you may have all of the stuff ready in your kit – it’s helpful for you to have a manual so you know exactly how to use it. There’s no doubt if your child is injured you will already be under a bit of stress – so having a step-by-step guide for you to follow could be exactly what you need.
Next time you are out and about, you can have peace of mind that you will have everything you need in case of any accidents.
