Moving to a new house is one of the most stressful things you can do – but thankfully, there are steps you can take to make it easier on yourself and your family.

Get Packing Early
No matter how early you’ve started packing, chances are that it won’t be early enough. It’s absolutely crucial that you don’t leave packing until the last minute – slow and steady wins the race. Try to do an hour every evening to get ahead of schedule – but don’t pack your essentials too early!
Put Items From The Same Rooms In The Same Boxes
It’s really difficult to make sure that everything ends up in the right place after a move, so you should try to keep items from the same rooms together as much as you possibly can. Ensure that you label each box so your movers put them all in the right place in your new home.
Get Organised
If you’re not a very organised person, then you need to change that. If you are an organised person – this is when you can come into your own. Make lists and spreadsheets so you can see what you’ve done and what you still need to do. Knowing what exactly is going on will help to make you feel more relaxed.

Throw Away What You Don’t Need
Now is the time to be ruthless when it comes to throwing things in the trash and donating them. If you find things that you’ve barely looked at in years, it’s time to get rid of them. They’re dead weight in your current home and you don’t want them to be dead weight in your new one either. On the other hand, you might refind old favourite things that you can bring back into your life.
Call In The Professionals
It’s what they’re there for. If you call in a removalist, they’ll be able to advise you and help you pack up and transport all your precious possessions. This will decrease your stress levels considerably – they’ll know how to keep your fragile items safe and do a lot of the heavy lifting for you.
Pack An Essentials Box
You’ll thank yourself for your essentials box on the first night in your new house when you don’t have to go rummaging through mountains of bags and boxes for your toothbrush. Pack essentials like the aforementioned toothbrush, toothpaste, toiletries, towels, sheets, fresh clothing, and some items like mugs, plates, cutlery, coffee and tea, along with some snacks to enjoy.

Use Suitcases For Heavy Items
A lot of people end up lifting too much while they’re moving and injuring themselves. For heavy items like books, why not pack them in suitcases instead? That means you can drag them behind you instead of lifting them up and potentially injuring yourself.
Keep Your Kids On Their Routine
If you have kids, they’ll probably be even more disoriented than you by moving house. Do your best to keep them on their normal routine as much as you can – unpack their rooms as quickly as possible, and make sure that you provide them with healthy food that they enjoy.
