How Spending Money Can Save You Money

Spending to save sounds a little odd, right? However, if you’re savvy, it can really work.

If you are the type of person or family who spends a lot of time indoors, you might as well equip yourself with suitable indoor entertainment! There is no point investing in a porch-swing if you only get a handful of sunny days each summer, for example. Instead, look at the household items and devices you often use, and consider upgrading or changing them.

One such device to consider is the television. If you tend to watch TV every night, it doesn’t make much sense to have only the most basic package. There are so many TV channels out there these days. You could be missing out on your new favourite show without even knowing about it! You can also upgrade the quality. Colour TV’s are no longer an exciting thing. Now it’s all about High-Definition! But if you have a TV set that supports HD, but no HD channels? Again, that doesn’t really make much sense.

To stretch your money further, consider combining your TV, phone and internet package into one. This could have lots of benefits. For example, you won’t have as many bills to deal with each month. Companies that offer packages bundling together all three are often super competitive with each other. While not so great for them, that means great news for us. Why? Because they have to make their prices affordable. They also often throw in little extras to make their package stand out amongst the others. This might mean access to movie channels or include the ability to call other countries. In turn, this can trickle down to help you make savings in other areas of your life.

You could save money on movie rentals, cinema trips and calling family and friends abroad. You might also be less inclined to leave the house, instead content to stay in and enjoy your faster internet, or new channels. This too could save you money on even basic things, like fuel.

You can check availability of Time Warner Cable Packages in your area, for example, nice and quick. This way you know your options, know what is and what isn’t available to you. The colder months are a sensible time to invest too, as you will likely be spending even more time inside.

On the topic of mobile phones, this too is another area where spending could mean saving. Once again, company competition is rife. This means that with a bit of careful digging, you might be able to change mobile provider and get something free. This is especially useful if the free item is something you needed anyway, like a laptop or shopping vouchers.

Next, think about the food and drink that you regularly consume. Always buying coffee on the way to work? This report suggests the average American spends $14.40 a week on the stuff. Investing in a good quality coffee machine means an initial outlay but an eventual saving. Similarly, for the health savvy amongst us, making your own smoothies does mean you need to buy the ingredients and equipment. However, this is highly likely to be cheaper than buying it in store.
