Chicago-Style Italian Beef Recipe

I live in North Carolina.  In the mountains.  In a tiny town where "Southern Home Cooking" is the only food available in restaurants.  Being from Illinois, I miss the good Greek restaurants with gyros and Italian Beef...

Like Portillo's.  OMG they make the best Italian Beef sandwiches... Or Al's?  If you're from Chicago, you know what I'm talking about. There's nothing like that around here.  So when I was pregnant with Kaya and craving an absolutely northern meal, I played around until I got the recipe almost exact - this is one of the best Italian Beef recipes out there, and I'm sharing it with you!

Chicago-Style Italian Beef

Ingredients:
5 lb rump roast
3 cups water
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons ground black pepper
1 teaspoon onion salt
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1 packet italian dressing mix

Directions:
Combine the water and seasonings in a saucepan over medium-high heat, and bring just to a boil.
Put roast in slow cooker and pour seasoning mixture over meat.

Turn on low setting and cook for 10-12 hours or high for 4-5 hours.
Shred meat and serve on Italian rolls or sub rolls

For a little more authentic flavor, add pepperoncini peppers and giardiniera.
